Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL®

Hardware Sentry KM discovers and monitors the health of the electronic components in your servers as well as the in SAN devices.

It is a Knowledge Module for BMC Software PATROL: once it has been installed on each managed server with a PATROL Agent, you can visualize the hardware components of your servers from any PATROL Console. Operators will be alerted as soon as a hardware failure is detected somewhere in your IT infrastructure.

It can also be configured to monitor external storage devices such as disk arrays, fiber switches and tape libraries. It will detect and report any hardware failures and collect statistics and performance metrics about the SAN.

It's greater and easier than any other hardware monitoring solution available on the market: with the same module, you can monitor the hardware of almost any server and any SAN device. Great server coverage and easy integration!

Features
  • Inventory
Discover all of the internal components of servers, disk arrays, fiber switches and tape libraries.
Perform an inventory with detailed information about each device’s characteristics.
  • Monitoring
Disks: RAID controllers, hard disks, RAIDs, failure prediction, availability of the volumes.
Environment: temperature, internal voltages, power supplies, fans.
Critical components: processors, memory modules, ECC errors, failure prediction.
Network links: network adapters, link loss, negotiated speed, data traffic, bandwidth utilization.
  • Diagnosis
Provides details about each monitored component in order to facilitate its replacement should a failure occurs (vendor, model, serial number, part number, FRU number, location in the chassis)
Full hardware health reports display detailed information regarding failures, their consequences and how to fix them.
  • Reporting
Ethernet traffic report: visualize the network traffic on each port, in MB/sec or the total amount of data that transited, in and out, in GB per hour or per day.
SAN traffic report: visualize the SAN traffic from the fiber switch, for each FC port, in MB/sec or the total amount of data that transited, in and out, in GB per hour or per day.
  • Capacity Report
Convenient report detailing the capacity of the monitored system: number of physical CPUs, amount of memory, overall size of disks and volumes, number of connected ports
For the disk arrays, report on the available disk space on each storage pool, from the lower to the upper allocation level.
  • Power Consumption Reports
The power consumption of each monitored server or storage device is reported as a simple graph in Watts in the PATROL Console. This graph shows the current instantaneous power drawn by the server.

Hardware Sentry KM also allows you to create an Energy Usage report based on this metric collected every 2 minutes for several days. The report exposes the amount of energy used by the server on a daily basis. The graph is in kWh and, by knowing the price of the kWh in your region, you can easily calculate the energy cost of the system.

By using other BMC reporting products, you can build reports for the entire server room, server by server, department by department and tell whose servers are the more expensive.

Hardware Sentry KM is the only software solution available on the market that is able to report on the power consumption of all servers and storage devices, including those that are not instrumented to report their power consumption.

How It Works
  1. Initialization of the product, configuration load, and availability check for various standard monitoring protocols with the credentials provided by the user
  2. Testing of platform detection for every connector against the platform to determine which instrumentation technology is present "underneath"
  3. The discovery relies on the detected connectors in order to discover the hardware pieces of the monitored system: processors, cards, disks, sensors, etc. The discovery also enables or disables parameters depending on the information available on the system and automatically sets all the thresholds. Last, the discovery triggers an alert when a device is no longer discovered and marks it as "missing"
  4. The collection process is executed every 2 minutes, retrieves the status of all devices, and executes alert actions when failure is detected

Customer Testimonials

I was wondering why my server was running so slow and found out later that the RAID was just degraded !

One day, my 'high-availability' cluster crashed, just like any low-cost PC. We just forgot to replace failed disks in the array...

I was standing right in front of a business-critical server when it suddenly went off! We understood later that the problem simply came from the second redundant power supply that failed.

Thanks to Hardware Sentry, forget these bad memories!
